Optimal Capacity Allocation for Support of ATM Services over SDH Unidirectional Rings

چکیده
This paper develops an analytical model for the multiplexing of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) connections onto the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) Virtual Containers over an unidirectional self-healing ring. The proposed algorithm can produce a near optimal solution in pseudo-polynomial time and may be used in the ATM management entity for the real time allocation of capacity to ATM connections. (STM) services in real time. On the other hand, the algorithm can also be used at the SDH level to provide a (near) optimal capacity allocation to higher level management functions such as ATM. This paper provides an analytical model for the ATM concentrator. This concentrator is located at the edge of the SDH ring network (according to the CAAS architecture) and will attempt to multiplex as many of ATM connections onto the SDH Virtual Containers as possible. The SDH management, in turn, tries to allocate the shared capacity of the ring to the ATM layer requests so that a particular decision criterion is met. For example, the decision criteria may be to maximise total revenue or to minimise the number of blocked connections. Since the second criterion will have a tendency of favouring lower bandwidth connections, we only consider the first decision criterion in this paper.

The paper presents an approach for the topology design of a Hungarian public ATM network on top of the Hungarian SDH network with STM-4 rings on the lower level, and STM-16 mesh on the higher level. The approach is being implemented in the XPLANET tool developed for the support of the network planning activities of the Hungarian Telecommunications Company Ltd. Based on the planning approach the...

The architecture of today's long distance transmission networks, which we call the baseline architecture, is a complex and multi-layered hierarchy of Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) circuits. One premise of the baseline architecture is that restoration from network failures is provided mostly by SONET/SDH rings. This paper presents an alternative architecture that uses ATM and Optical Layer Cr...

Using typical operation scenarios, the throughput of IEEE 802.17 Resilient Packet Rings (RPR) operated in an SDH-like fashion is compared to the throughput of RPR with optimized bandwidth planning. Introduction IEEE 802.17 Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) has been introduced as a novel MAC layer protocol for ring based media [1]. RPR networks transport data (e.g., IP) packets over optical rings and ...

The paper presents a realistic scenario for the introduction of a public ATM network to be implemented on the Hungarian SDH infrastructure. The Hungarian SDH network was deployed in 1996 with STM-4 rings on the lower level, and an STM-16 mesh subnetwork on the higher level, while the ATM network is intended to be introduced with two hierarchical levels: the access level and the backbone level c...

Many efforts have been made to manage homogenous B-ISDN networks across multiple domains. However, less effort has been made for hybrid BISDN network management. The ACTS MISA(Management of Integrated SDH and ATM networks) project addresses the issue of hybrid ATM and SDH management, aiming to automate the end-to-end GBC (Global Broadband Connectivity) service in the integrated ATM and SDH netw...
